Located directly opposite the archaeological zone of Teopanzolco in Cuernavaca, Mexico, the Teopanzolco Cultural Center establishes a powerful dialogue between contemporary architecture and pre-Hispanic heritage. Designed by Isaac Broid + PRODUCTORA (Carlos Bedoya, Victor Jaime, Wonne Ickx, Abel Perles), the project redefines the relationship between cultural infrastructure and historic landscape.
Conceived as a response to its extraordinary context, the building operates through two primary architectural elements: a triangular volume housing the public programs, lobby, ticket office, services, cloakroom, and main auditorium, and a surrounding horizontal platform containing operational spaces such as dressing rooms, storage areas, workshops, and a multipurpose black box theater.

The elevated platform functions as a grand public plinth and viewing terrace, offering panoramic views of both the Teopanzolco archaeological site and the city beyond. Embedded patios activate the base, including a sunken courtyard that transforms into an intimate open-air theater. The intervention carefully preserves existing mature trees while generating a sequence of exterior public spaces that extend the civic realm.

Above, a monumental stepped triangular roof emerges as a continuation of the platform. Designed as a large inhabitable ramp, it reduces the building’s visual impact while simultaneously creating an additional open-air auditorium with the ancient pyramid as its backdrop. The sloped planes of the roof, forming the coverings of both the main auditorium and lobby, establish a dynamic interplay of geometry and perspective that unfolds throughout the visitor’s journey.

Strategically aligned with the axis of the main pyramid, the semi-open lobby becomes a contemporary mirador, a gathering space that frames the archaeological landmark. Cross-ventilation and permanent openings eliminate the need for mechanical air conditioning, reinforcing the project’s environmental sensitivity.

This film is a poetic and cinematic architectural walkthrough, a sensory exploration of space, light, geometry, and history. Rather than simply documenting the building, the camera moves through it as an experience, revealing how architecture can mediate between past and present, monumentality and subtlety, culture and landscape.

A contemporary cultural center that does not compete with history, it converses with it.Architecture as Landscape: A Poetic Film Walkthrough of Teopanzolco Cultural Center, Mexico.
