Casa CLL — A Contemporary Retreat Shaped by Landscape | Project by Bernardes Arquitetura
Nestled within the rolling landscape of Porto Feliz, in the countryside of São Paulo, Casa CLL is a 992-square-meter residence designed by Bernardes Arquitetura as a place of gathering, rest, and connection with nature.
Completed in 2022, the project unfolds across a sloping site through a series of carefully positioned terraces that organize the home’s private, social, and leisure spaces. Rather than imposing itself upon the landscape, the architecture follows the terrain, creating a sequence of spaces that feel naturally embedded within their surroundings.
A single floating roof unifies much of the house, lowering to create a more intimate atmosphere in the bedrooms while opening generously above the living areas. Beneath it, stone volumes anchor the architecture to the land, while wide overhangs define protected circulation paths that blur the distinction between indoors and outdoors.
The experience of the house is defined by movement. Transitions between levels happen gradually through gardens, courtyards, water, and open-air spaces, creating a rhythm that encourages a slower and more attentive way of inhabiting the landscape. Architecture, vegetation, light, and topography continuously overlap, producing an environment that feels both expansive and remarkably intimate.
A green roof strengthens this relationship between the built and natural worlds. Beyond its environmental performance, reducing heat absorption, retaining rainwater, and contributing to thermal comfort, it visually extends the landscape over the architecture itself, allowing the house to dissolve into its setting. Carefully positioned skylights bring natural light deep into the interior, while solar panels contribute to the home's sustainability strategy.
The material palette is intentionally restrained. White Piracema stone, charred wood panels with subtle green pigmentation, and laminated timber create a composition that is both sophisticated and deeply connected to the surrounding environment. Inside, a curated selection of collectible furniture and Brazilian design pieces, including works by Jorge Zalszupin, Joaquim Tenreiro, and Jacqueline Terpins, enriches the spaces with layers of history and craftsmanship.
Landscape design by Marcelo Faisal Paisagismo and lighting design by Foco Luz e Desenho further reinforce the project's seamless relationship with nature, architecture, and atmosphere.
Recognized internationally, Casa CLL received the 2024 LOOP Design Award for Architecture Design of the Year, the 2024 AsBEA Sérgio Bernardes Award in the Residential category, and the Architecture MasterPrize for Residential Architecture, among other distinctions.
In this film, we explore Casa CLL through a cinematic and immersive architectural journey. Rather than simply documenting the project, the film seeks to convey the experience of moving through it, the changing qualities of light, the presence of water and vegetation, the transitions between spaces, and the subtle ways architecture frames everyday life. The result is an intimate encounter with a house that reveals itself gradually, inviting viewers to experience the landscape, atmosphere, and design as if they were walking through it themselves.
