This is a good quality late keeping apple, hence the original name Winter King. It is mainly sold as Winston, after Sir Winston Churchill the UK WW2 Premier. The name was officially changed in 1944. Its a good backyard apple which was raised in Welford, Berkshire, England in 1920 by William Pope from a cross between Cox's Orange Pippin and Worcester Pearmain.
It is very fertile and typically sets far too many fruitlets, requiring hand thinning or else you will get too many too small fruits. I have posted many videos about fruit thinning in the past.
The flavour is good, its a firm crunchy apple and should keep well into the New Year.
This apple was popular with our customers on tastings, as a result of which I grafted quite a few more than we had originally. A definite recommend as a late apple, but don't forget to thin in early summer or you will get golf ball sized fruits.
