Pretty much what it says in the title. The main food of the trout in this lake (and most trout lakes) is midge pupae. Here we see several trout (native brown or stocked rainbow, I'm not sure) feeding steadily on midge pupae trapped in the surface film, known as 'emergers'. The fish are described as 'porpoising' when they feed steadily in a pre-occupied manner like this, and are much harder to catch on a fly than you might think-I know, I've tried!
