Another Crab's Treasure

ABOUT THE WORK
In this charming and goofy yet remarkably rich and emotional game from the appropriately named Aggro Crab studios, we follow the adventures of Kril, a small hermit crab whose beloved shell has recently been repossessed by a loan shark after he failed to pay his newly-required oceanic taxes (Did you know the ocean has converted to the plastic standard now? What a coddamn load of crab*). In pursuit of his shell, he ventures into the open ocean, where the rest of crab society is dealing with their own problems: namely, the pollution of the ocean by the mysterious gunk (it’s oil. It’s obviously oil). Kril must make do by wearing soda cans, thimbles, and red solo cups as shells to defend himself against giant enemy crabs and other deadly sea creatures.
Though at first Kril’s only goal is to get his shell back, on his journey he meets a motley cast of characters who teach him that he might be able to make a bigger difference in the world. He tries at first to please Duchess Magista of Slacktide, a Dungeness Crab who is building up a lavish palace of colorful plastics, but after fetching a fake pearl for her (and incidentally unlocking the magical power of Umami) he discovers she has gone mad from the pollution and must fight his way past her. Things don’t go much better when he reaches the city of New Carcinia and discovers that the ruthless Shellfish Corporation, led by the devious isopod Roland, Venture Crabitalist and his hired muscle squid Inkerton, controls the entire city through dominance of the microplastic-based economy. Kril’s only hope is a mysterious treasure map on the back of a massive fallen cereal box which promises untold wealth should he assemble all the pieces. But Roland is after that treasure too, and even greater danger lurks in the Sands Between…
This arrangement explores much of the wonderfully varied music in the game. Starting with the peaceful main theme, we quickly transition to the boss fight theme for The Consortium, a discarded lobster trap stuffed full of various angry sea creatures. This upbeat theme quotes heavily from Baba Yaga - The Hut on Chicken Legs from Pictures at an Exhibition by Modest Mussorgsky, a popular classical piece best known for its orchestral arrangement by Ravel. If you’re familiar with the piece, be sure to listen out for even more quotes from Pictures at an Exhibition that have been inserted throughout the arrangement! From here, we hear the theme for Magista, Tyrant of Slacktide, in harsh cut time, and then the regal yet frenetic theme of Camtscha, the Bleached King. After a brief Pictures interlude, it’s time for Roland, Venture Crabitalist, the dancing swing music that accompanies the climactic battle on his private pinball machine barge. And then… well, let’s just say things get a little wacky. In the depths of the ocean, at the bottom of the drain, where all damned souls come to rest and the power of Umami is greatest, there exists… a CRAB GRAVE. And from that tragic place, from that one simple piano theme, we pull… an absolutely unhinged compilation of musical shenaniganry. Let’s just say you’ll probably recognize some of the themes in this final section, whether from the previous parts of this arrangement or from outside sources…
