Are Korean manhwa and Chinese donghua really just “slop” compared to Japanese anime and manga?
I saw a post arguing that while Korea and China could compete with Japan’s animation and comic industries in an ideal world, most of what they actually produce is derivative “slop” that drags their industries down.
I agree that webcomics and web novels aren’t always used to their full potential—but that problem isn’t unique to Korea or China. Japan puts out an enormous amount of mediocre content too. Just look at isekai: every season is flooded with low-effort adaptations, with only a tiny fraction standing out. And for every isekai anime, there are countless manga and light novels that never get adapted because they’re simply not good.
That doesn’t mean Japan lacks quality, it just means high output comes with a lot of misses. The same logic applies elsewhere.
Korea and China have proven they can compete in storytelling. Series like Lord of Mysteries, To Be Hero X, Link Click, and Omniscient Reader’s Viewpoint rival top Japanese works in writing and creativity. Beyond that, web novels like Reverend Insanity and The Regressor’s Tale of Cultivation outperform much of what comes out of Japan, yet rarely get the same recognition.
Japan’s industry is much larger, which allows it to produce far more series—and purely by volume, more standout hits. That doesn’t make Japanese media inherently superior. Quality exists everywhere; it’s just not evenly visible.
