This is something I see much too often with beginner animators. They want to get into animation and start with a simple animation of their character.... which turns out to be something with a rainbow something or other, stripes or other funny patterns, cloths, scarves, bangles, piercings, etc and things that make the character pretty but only when you're drawing that one nice picture of them.
A lot of this stuff is probably a no-brainer to some people. But i do have plenty of other guides too.

Left side is my drawing space only, right side is the whole screen so you can see more of what im actually doing.
The reason my screen is sideways is because I use a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet PC and turn the screen and lid sideways to draw on. In this configuration, my left hand can easily press Ctrl/shift/etc when I need to while I draw with my right.
Im drawing on GIMP 2.6.10.
