Explosions! Everyone loves when things go boom! Unless one is in too close proximity.
Explosions are the rapid release of energy in all directions. Rockets are the same except the energy is all released in only one direction.
There are more elements to an explosion such as the shrapnel created by the explosion and the effects of the shockwave etc. I've only covered the physics behind the smoke (and fire if applicable) involved in an explosion. As animators, we dont need to know the complex physics back to front (Because i sure don't!) We just need to make it look like what we're trying to emulate.

Left side is my drawing space only, right side is the whole screen so you can see more of what im actually doing.
The reason my screen is sideways is because I use a Lenovo Thinkpad Tablet PC and turn the screen and lid sideways to draw on. In this configuration, my left hand can easily press Ctrl/shift/etc when I need to while I draw with my right.
