The conditions of industrial animal agriculture require huge antimicrobial inputs—that is, antibiotic, antiviral, antifungal, and antiparasitic medicines. Without those inputs, both livestock and human populations would be vulnerable to pathogen outbreaks. But such a reliance on antimicrobials also leads, eventually, to resistant pathogens.
Rather than trying to prevent catastrophic outbreaks while maintaining this system, why not evolve beyond the system? We don’t need it.
