Getting to take care of patients in their greatest hour of need in the emergency department is exciting. It's the greatest job in the world. The opportunity then to study and research how to do that better and give patients better care in a more timely and safe fashion is even more exciting, as I'm able to explore that in my research.
I'm Andrew Muck, chair of the department of emergency medicine at UVA. My research is taking advantage of the opportunities given to us by AI and large machine learning. With the help of these AI and large machine learning tools, we are looking at ways to increase efficiency for hospital throughput, how to get the patients in front of a doctor as soon as possible.
With the advent of our electronic medical records, we now have access to large volumes of data. We can now explore that data with large machine learning tools to identify best practices to improve efficiencies in the hospital and the emergency department. We also can detect signs of deterioration. We can look to see when patients in the waiting room are getting sicker. We can better understand when an emergency department is not working as efficiently as it should, when a hospital is not able to handle the capacity of patients it sees and to use these AI and large machine learning tools to see what we can put in the system to bring best care to our patients.
