I love my research because it's translational feature. It bridges human genetic discovery with cell and molecular mechanism. I also love my research because it involves cross-disciplinary collaborations from human genetics, network science, structural biology, biochemistry, and bioengineering. Hi, my name is Anny Xiaobo Zhou. I'm a professor in medicine, pulmonary and the critical care division in the department of medicine. I also have a joint appointment with the department of Genome Science. I serve as inaugural director for the Center of the Translation of Genomic Initiative. Our research program aims to characterize the function of genetic variants identified from genome-wide association studies. And therefore, designing novel drug targets to treat lung disease. Drugs that target genes identified from human genetic discovery, such as GWAS, have doubled or tripled success rate in clinical trials, as demonstrated in metabolic disease, neural disorder, and cardiovascular disease. We apply similar approach in lung disease by integrative genomic approach at a single cell level, combined with organoid models to identify the novel insights in lung biology and also identify the novel drugs to treat patients, millions of patients who are affected by COPD, asthma, and pulmonary fibrosis. This aligns very well with the mission of the Manning Institute.
