$Circe Episode from The Odyssey After barely escaping their last two encounters with man-eating giants, Odysseus and his crew pulled their ship onto the shores of the Aeaean island. They pull into the harbor in total silence, completely worn out in body and mind. The men are starving, so Odysseus heads into the thick forest alone to hunt. He manages to spear a massive antlered stag, ties its feet together, and carries it back to the shore to feed his exhausted crew. But meat alone doesnt fix morale. When Odysseus tells them he saw smoke rising from the center of the island, the men completely break down. They weep bitterly, terrified that whoever is cooking in that forest is going to slaughter them just like the last monsters did. Odysseus knows they cant stay on the beach forever. He divides the men into two companies and forces them into casting lots in a bronze helmet. The draw falls on his second in command, Eurylochus, who marches twenty-two crying men inland to investigate. To survive, the crew needs to know where they are and who controls the island. Yet gathering that basic intelligence requires them to walk straight into the exact scenario that is causing their trauma. When Eurylochus and his men reach the source of the smoke, they find a finely built stone house in a clearing. Prowling around the gates are mountain lions and wolves. But instead of attacking, these massive animals wag their tails and rub against the terrified Greeks. From inside the stone house, the men hear a woman singing beautifully while working at a loom. The sheer domesticity of the scene disarms them. Polites, one of Odysseuss most trusted men, suggests they simply call out to her. The woman is the goddess Circe. She opens the doors, invites the men in, and offers them a meal. She mixes cheese, honey, and Pramnian wine into a mash, but she laces the food with a heavy dose of mind-altering poison. The moment the men finish drinking, Circe strikes them with a wand. Bristles erupt as their bodies rapidly shrink and contort into pigs. She drives them into outdoor sties and throws them acorns. The men are physically swine, but their human consciousness and memories remain entirely intact inside their new bodies. Eurylochus is the only one who survives. Suspecting a trap from the beginning, he stayed outside the gates. He watches his crewmates vanish, then sprints back to the beach in such a state of shock he can barely force the words out to warn Odysseus. Seeking directions has rapidly escalated into a full-blown hostage crisis. Odysseus is now isolated on the beach, his leadership fractured, and half his remaining crew imprisoned in a literal pigsty by an entity they dont understand. Eurylochus grabs Odysseus by the knees, begging him to abandon the lost men and flee immediately. Odysseus ignores him. He slings his bronze sword over his shoulder, grabs his bow, and heads up the mountain alone. As Odysseus approaches the enchanted house, the god Hermes intercepts him, disguised as a young man. Hermes tells Odysseus that brute force will only get him thrown in the pigsty with the others. He needs a specific countermeasure. Hermes pulls a plant from the ground with a black root and a milk white flower. The gods call it moly. It is impossible for mortals to uproot, and carrying it acts as a biological shield that prevents Circes poisons from taking effect. With the antidote in hand, Hermes lays out a strict three step tactical plan. First, Odysseus must willingly drink the poison. Second, when Circe raises her wand, he must draw his sword and charge. Third, when she yields, he must force her to swear a solemn oath to plot no further harm. Hermes has provided a precise sequence of logical operations. Odysseus is entering the house to execute a divine algorithm that bypasses the witchs power. Odysseus walks to the house and accepts Circes invitation. She seats him on a silver inlaid chair and hands him the golden goblet of poisoned wine. He drinks the entire thing. She strikes him with her wand and commands him to go to the pigsty. Nothing happens. Odysseus immediately executes step two. He draws his sword and lunges at her throat. Circe screams, drops to the floor, and grabs his knees in surrender. Realizing that only the legendary Odysseus could resist her magic, she offers him her bed. Following the protocol, Odysseus refuses until she swears the binding oath to protect him, which she does. Circes maids bathe him and set out a massive feast, but Odysseus sits staring at the food, refusing to eat. He tells Circe he wont touch a single piece of bread until he sees his men freed with his own eyes. Circe walks out to the pens and smears a second ointment on the hogs. The bristles fall off and the men stand up as humans again, appearing younger, taller, and more robust than the day they arrived.$
