Traditional Japanese arts take center stage at Carnegie Hall! In this excerpt of “Shishi,” Sankyokai is joined by Noh actor Yoshimasa Kanze and Kabuki actor Hayato Nakamura as part of Carnegie Hall’s Spotlight on Japan in November 2025.
The performance explores the new artistic possibilities of “hayashi”—the traditional musical accompaniment of Noh and Kabuki—by fusing the resonances of Japan’s two foremost traditional performing arts. Noh emerged in the Muromachi period more than six centuries ago, while Kabuki took shape roughly two centuries later. Though both have developed distinct forms and aesthetics, the two arts have rarely shared the same stage.
