The Vienna Philharmonic, an ensemble that’s been referred to as “Gustav Mahler’s orchestra,” returned to Carnegie Hall in February 2026 under the baton of Andris Nelsons for the composer’s Symphony No. 1.
Recognized as one of the all-time great symphonies, Mahler’s First Symphony features sounds of nature and echoes of Hungarian folk music throughout. The first movement (“Langsam. Schleppend.”) begins with a shimmering pastoral introduction and transforms into a grand, sweeping landscape.
