“The lotus, to me, signifies when a person is stuck in the mud of life and has to somehow grow out of it. And through their growth, from out of the mud, they yet experience another obstacle of life, which is this murky water that they have to travel upward toward in order to reach the surface and experience the light. To me, that light is our faith, our love, God, as well as anything that you would put there that has meaning to your life.
This "Lotus Pedals Unfolding" was a collaborative work in that after I made the original composition, I worked with Arlen and she would give me lessons in classical music about why things worked and why things didn’t work. After many revisions and a lot of study, this is the final piece that we both decided is ready for publication.” —Paul

In 2026, Carnegie Hall celebrates the 15th anniversary of Musical Connections by releasing Sing Sing Voices, a series of three video playlists that feature original music created by men incarcerated at Sing Sing Correctional Facility, a maximum‑security prison in New York. Shared publicly for the first time, the project includes nearly 50 songs written and performed during the longstanding residency in collaboration with Carnegie Hall teaching artists. Highlighting the creativity and humanity fostered through music, Grammy Award winners Common, Joyce DiDonato, and Arturo O’Farrill each introduce a playlist.
