Rikki Poynter | an awkward experience with American Sign Language interpreter @rikkipoynter | Uploaded February 2024 | Updated October 2024, 15 hours ago.
It was an awkward moment and the tone was weird and… I don’t know. I’ve never had an interpreter ask me if she was still needed regardless of how often I was looking at the interpreter (or how often I wasn’t). I wrote a bit more about this on my Patreon. Transcript:
Okay, so, I had this very awkward experience with a new- for me- um, interpreter at the audiologist on Friday. She knew I was mainstreamed, speaking English as my first language. I told her this before the appointment actually started. So, naturally, when I have my hearing aids in, I end up looking at the audiologist a lot but I’m still using the interpreter. Although, my audiologist is like (gestures in front of me) here and the interpreter is (gestures away from me) over there. So I’m ha- having to look like this (moves head back and forth). So, anyway, at one point, the audiologist is gonna go out onto the phone and she looks over and she’s like, “Do you still… do you still need me?” And I was, you know, explaining to her like, you know English is my first language. She was like, “Yeah, I can tell.”
