Rikki Poynter | spotify is putting their lyrics behind a paywall @rikkipoynter | Uploaded May 2024 | Updated October 2024, 15 hours ago.
I recently stopped being a premium Spotify user in order to save some money. Having the free version of Spotify comes with a lot of limits but now to add a limit on lyrics to that? That is a ridiculous move on their part. Lyrics are an accessibility tool for everyone: deaf and hard of hearing people, people with ADHD, auditory processing disorder, even non-disabled people. There is no good reason to have them be paid for. Yes, I can go to another browser on my phone while listening to the song, but why should anyone when the lyrics were right there to begin with?
I wrote a piece about it on Patreon (free for everyone to read) and I will be having a long form video about it on my main YouTube channel next week.

So Spotify has decided that they will now be putting their lyrics under a paywall. There is now a monthly limit to being able to view lyrics if you are not a premium member. What is that monthly limit? I have no idea. And as someone who is still a free user, I’m not sure I wanna find out. Either way, this is a ridiculous move on Spotify because lyrics are an accessibility tool. They are very helpful for deaf listeners like myself. For anybody with a disability: ADHD, auditory processing disorder. But even then, it doesn’t- but even for non disabled people, for hearing people, why should they also be paying for this? Nobody should be paying for this. Why, Spotify, are we putting lyrics behind a paywall? I know you’re a business and you want money, but this is ridiculous.
