Twenty years after being retired from revenue service, Amtrak EMD F40PHR 281 is still running strong at the California State Railroad Museum in Sacramento. With the museum hosting a variety of historic railcars and locomotives, the Sacramento Southern Railroad also offers weekend excursion train rides along the banks of the Sacramento River. Traveling to and from the museum, the Amtrak 281 happened to be running on this particular day.
With everything working out perfectly, I had an opportunity to see the 281 one Spring morning in 2022. While 281 was turned long hood forward for the Southbound runs, it was excellent to see and hear it running in person!
