Film Score and More | Amistad Soundtrack: Dry Your Tears, Afrika (John Williams) - Piano Cover @FilmScoreandMore | Uploaded June 2018 | Updated October 2024, 3 hours ago.
This is John Williams’s “Dry Your Tears, Afrika” from the 1997 Steven Spielberg directed Dreamworks film “Amistad,” transcribed by Audrey Snyder. For this piece, John Williams took the lyrics of a poem by Bernard Dadie, published in 1967, translated them to the African language of Mende, wrote the music to the lyrics of the poem, and had them sung by a children’s choir.
I have to confess that I’ve actually never seen this movie before. I heard this song in concert several months ago and it’s stuck with me, so when I found the sheet music recently in this much detail I jumped at the chance to use it. The very beginning and end of the song both deviate a bit from the song I’ve linked below, however, and I’ve made a few changes of my own, as I always do.

This song, movie, poster, (and language) do not belong to me, they belong to Dreamworks, Spielberg, Williams, and Dadie, (and I guess the Mende people).
