China, like Europe during the Middle Ages, was ruled by feudalism. The Zhou Dynasty was the last of Chinas feudal kingdoms. It started roughly 3,000 years ago and lasted approximately 800 years. However, by the second half of the dynasty, the Zhou royals had lost all political power. Real power was in the hands of the dukes, who began to call themselves kings. Bigger states conquered smaller states, and after hundreds of years, China was controlled by seven kingdoms — the Warring States. Qin Shi Huang was concerned about the future of his kingdom and tried everything he could to save it from disintegrating. In the process, he not only united Chinas territory and established a strong central government, but he also required the standardization of the Chinese language. The characters people used to write would be the same wherever they went, regardless of their spoken dialect. Qins legal system was exceptionally rigorous. Even slight infractions could result in serious penalties. Qin Shi Huang died in 210 B.C. Fu Su, his enlightened son, should have replaced him, but after years of conflict, Qins bureaucrats were hardened men who wanted profit and power. They seized power and pushed Fu Su to commit suicide. The Qin Dynasty lasted only 15 years before collapsing. However, the central authority, imperial majesty, and cultural unity it established endured for more than two millennia. The term China is derived from the ch pronunciation of the q in Qin, and historians today refer to Ying Zheng as Qin Shi Huang — the First Emperor. Foot Binding in China Shocking photographs have been released, revealing the terrible reality of the ancient Chinese practice of foot binding. The technique, which was carried out on girls as young as four, involved fracturing toes to manipulate the feet into a lotus form. Foot-binding, as it is known, was originally practiced 1,000 years ago. It was normal for centuries before being outlawed in 1911. It became popular among courtesans after a Tang Dynasty emperor fell in love with a mistress who had tiny feet and wrapped them in silk while dancing. The technique became common among upper-class court performers, but it quickly extended to other classes. Molding the lotus-shaped foot requires cutting a girls toenails extremely short when she is between the ages of four and nine, then firmly wrapping the foot in bandages. It was commonly done in the winter when the feet were numb, making it slightly less painful, but it was still an extremely distressing event. Having lotus-shaped feet was considered a sign of riches and beauty; nevertheless, only girls were exposed to this procedure. Although foot-binding happened in all socioeconomic groups, it was particularly popular in wealthier households who could afford not to work. Once a foot was bound, it was nearly impossible to undo. There are now only a handful of surviving elderly ladies who got the procedure, and they have suffered lifetime agony and disability as a result. The images depict the horrors of foot-binding during the Qing dynasty, which ruled from 1644 to 1912. After their authority ended, life in China altered dramatically, and many ancient traditions, including foot-binding, were lost to history.$
