The Monster Of The Congo River

The name Mokèlé-mbèmbé refers to a creature thought to live in the upper reaches of the Congo River basin. Numerous physical descriptions of the Mokèlé-mbèmbé have been provided over the years. According to the various accounts, the creature is enormous in size, with a long neck, a small head, and a long tail. Apparently, the Mokèlé-mbèmbé was an herbivorous creature that lived in caves near the river, where it could find its favorite food - a type of liana. Despite its vegetarian diet, the Mokèlé-mbèmbé is thought to be aggressive if approached by humans.

According to one account, the beast has a single horn, possibly like that of a rhino, with which it kills elephants. There is also speculation that the Mokèlé-mbèmbé is a spiritual being rather than a physical being. Many locals believe that such a creature still exists. However, aside from alleged footprints, hazy photographic images, and a flood of eyewitness reports, there is a lack of conclusive evidence to prove Mokèlé-mbèmbé's existence.

Mysterious J'ba Fofi Spiders

If you've never heard of the giant Congo spiders, also known as the J'ba FoFi, don't worry; neither have I until now. These massive ground-dwelling spiders are said to be extremely dangerous, not to mention highly venomous, as they prey on diminutive forest antelopes, birds, and other small game. The spiders are said to lay white, peanut-sized eggs in clusters, and the pygmies avoid them but have killed them in the past. The giant spiders were once common but are now uncommon. Most of the anecdotal stories describe spiders digging a shallow tunnel under tree roots and concealing it with a large leaf screen.

Then they weave an almost invisible web between their burrow and a nearby tree, tying the entire area together with a web of trip lines. Some unsuspecting animals, soon to be on the creature's menu, will trip the line, alerting the spider. The victim will then be pursued through the web. This predatory behavior is like that of several trap-door spider species. Some indigenous peoples in the Congolese regions where the J'ba FoFi has been spotted claim that the spider was once quite common, but has since become extremely rare.
