H.E. James Lambert, OAS Secretary for Hemispheric Affairs participating on the Together: 30 Years of Canada at the OAS panel discussion, January 8, 2021.

On January 8, 1990, after 28 years as an observer, Canada became a member of the Organization of American States (OAS). Since then Canada has been a steadfast partner in the advancement of human rights, gender equality, and democracy, all the while working to strengthen the OAS as an institution so that it may play an effective and constructive role as the premier multilateral forum in the hemisphere.

To commemorate Canada’s 30th anniversary as a member of the OAS, the Permanent Mission of Canada, together with the Art Museum of the Americas (AMA) of the OAS and with support from the Canada Council for the Arts, presents Together: 30 Years of Canada at the OAS. This virtual exhibit, curated by Pansee Atta, includes a selection from the AMA’s permanent collection, donated by the Canada Council for the Arts in honour of Canada’s 150th Anniversary in 2017. The selected pieces are a reflection of Canada’s priorities at the OAS: human rights, gender equality, democracy, with an added emphasis on Indigenous rights and climate change.
