It's been a good year for screens and digital assistants. With Google releasing the Nest/Home Hub earlier this year, Amazon has risen to the challenge and released the Echo Show 5. Full screen Echo's are not a new thing for Amazon. Customers previously had the full sized Echo Show ( both gen1 and gen2) as well as the tiny screened Echo Spot to choose from.
In my mind, the Echo Show was too expensive, and the Echo Spot’s screen was just too small. The Echo Show 5 is something that really fits in the middle and coming in at a price point just short of $100, I think this might be the device that makes Amazon a real contender in the screen equipped digital assistant market.
If you’re already in the Amazon Echo ecosystem, you’ll find the Echo Show 5 fits simply slides into your existing home with little effort. I love the fact that they have made it possible for customers to go through a complete setup without having to pick up their phone or tablet. As well, the attention to detail around giving constant feedback during the setup process is really wonderful to see.
For those of us with family members who are less technically incline; I can see sending an echo show 5 as a gift and not worrying about getting the inevitable tech-support calls that usually come with that kind of gift.
The speakers in the Echo Show 5 aren’t as great as the full Echo Show, or even an Echo Gen 3 to be honest, but they are better than the Spot or the Dot so it’s really the in-between device. You’re not going to use it to run parties ( although you could use the optional audio out connect to your existing sound system if that interest you. )
