Within the story of the Passion, this aria occurs after Jesus has been crucified. He says, "It is finished" and dies. The translation of the aria is below:

Es ist vollbracht! (It is finished!)
It is finished!
Oh, consolation for all hurt souls;
that night of mourning
approaches its final hour.
The Hero from Judah hath triumphed in strength,
and ends the struggle.
It is finished!
