From JOAN OF KENT to KATE MIDDLETON, this is the story of all the Princesses of Wales from the time England took control of the principality of Wales in 1284 until today. In this video from History Calling I’ll briefly take you through the lives of these eleven famous royal women; specifically Joan of Kent, Anne Neville, Catherine of Aragon, Caroline of Brandenburg-Ansbach, Augusta of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg, Caroline of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, Alexandra of Denmark, Mary of Teck, Lady Diana Spencer, Camilla Parker-Bowles (nee Shand) and Catherine Middleton. I’ll also explain why there have been so few Princesses of Wales over the past 750 years, which of these women were in the unenviable position of being Princesses of Wales who never became Queen and who I think is the most famous Princess of Wales. There will also be lots of fun and even bizarre factoids too. For instance, do you know who became Princess of Wales twice, or who was engaged to one prospective Prince of Wales, only to marry another? I’ll also tell you what the longest gap between Princesses was, which royal house had no Princess of Wales at all and which two became Princess of Wales through their first marriages, but only Queens through their second. Along the way, we’ll inevitably look at these women’s Princes too, including Edward, the Black Prince, Prince Arthur Tudor, the future George II, George IV, George V and of course, the most recent to hold the title, King Charles III. Bonus points if you know which man is the only Prince of Wales to ever produce two Princesses.
