The new CHARLES III COINS have started to appear in the UK, but how did the Queen's death affect coins in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland and what do British coins look like now, with a new monarch on them? In this royal history documentary from History Calling, we’ll look at how the appearance of new British coins is affected by the history of coinage and the UK monarchy, for every little piece of metallic currency you see is a mini-history lesson. In particular I’ll answer the questions how have British coins changed since the death of Elizabeth II, what do the words on coins mean and how does King Charles III’s portrait mark a departure from the images of Queen Elizabeth II on UK coinage?
So far, only 50p coins with Charles’s profile on them have been released, but these show the royal coat of arms broken down into its constituent parts and representations of all four home nations in the UK. What are the four symbols of the United Kingdom though? The answer is a shamrock for Ireland, a leek for Wales, a thistle for Scotland and a Tudor rose for England and the symbolism behind these images stretches back centuries and will be briefly explained in this video.
