BMW’s All-Electric Neue Klasse Begins Production in Late 2025
BMW will begin series production of its all-electric Neue Klasse vehicles at its Debrecen plant in Hungary by the end of 2025. Every Neue Klasse vehicle will come standard with BMW’s new “Heart of Joy” central computer.
Introducing the “Heart of Joy”
The “Heart of Joy” is BMW’s advanced central computing platform that integrates key systems like drivetrain, braking, steering, charging, and energy recuperation. Developed fully in-house, it processes data ten times faster than previous systems—enabling millisecond-level responsiveness for precise and efficient driving.
One major highlight is its regenerative braking system. By coordinating the drivetrain and braking functions, it handles 98% of braking situations using energy recuperation instead of friction brakes. This results in up to 25% more energy efficiency and extended driving range.
BMW Vision Driving Experience (VDX)
To test the capabilities of the Heart of Joy, BMW built the Vision Driving Experience prototype, or VDX. This experimental vehicle produces a staggering 18,000 Nm of torque and serves as a high-performance testbed. While it’s not intended for production, the VDX showcases how the system can manage extreme power with total control and stability.
Looking Ahead: The Neue Klasse Platform
BMW’s Neue Klasse represents a complete rethinking of electric vehicle design. Alongside the Heart of Joy, the platform includes three more high-performance computing units—focused on automated driving, infotainment, and vehicle operations like climate and lighting. These systems allow for seamless over-the-air updates and ensure vehicles remain cutting-edge throughout their life.
With the Neue Klasse, BMW combines next-generation technology with its signature driving dynamics to set a new standard for the future of electric vehicles.
