The Volvo VNL Autonomous is Volvo's first production-ready autonomous truck, unveiled in May 2024. It integrates Volvo's commercial vehicle expertise with Aurora Innovation's Level 4 autonomous driving technology, allowing it to operate without human intervention under specific conditions.
This truck features the Aurora Driver system, which includes advanced AI software, dual computers, proprietary lidar capable of detecting objects over 400 meters away, high-resolution cameras, imaging radar, and additional sensors. To ensure safety and reliability, the VNL Autonomous is equipped with redundant systems for braking, steering, communications, computation, power management, energy storage, and vehicle motion management.
Manufacturing takes place at Volvo's New River Valley assembly plant in Dublin, Virginia, the company's largest truck plant globally. In February 2025, Volvo Autonomous Solutions partnered with Waabi, a self-driving technology company, to integrate Waabi's virtual driver system into the Volvo VNL Autonomous, aiming to enhance autonomous freight transport solutions.
Volvo Autonomous Solutions has outlined a phased approach to commercialization. The initial phase involves deploying autonomous trucks with safety drivers onboard. As the technology matures and proves its reliability, the safety drivers will be phased out, leading to full autonomous operations.
The introduction of the Volvo VNL Autonomous represents a significant advancement in autonomous trucking, aiming to increase freight capacity and address industry challenges such as driver shortages.
