Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents in the field are expected to have body cameras by the end of September, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said at a press conference in New York on Tuesday.
“We’re getting close. By the end of September, I’m pretty sure we will be there," Mullin said.
“There’s also options we have. We have the permanent cameras that we’re trying to put on there,” he added.
The use of body cameras has largely garnered bipartisan agreement, particularly amid aggressive and sometimes deadly confrontations between federal agents and members of the public over the past year.
White House border czar Tom Homan has repeatedly said he supports agents having body cameras. “I’m a big proponent of cameras. I want the American people to see what the officer sees when he makes a decision,” Homan said on CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday.
Motorola is working with DHS on the mics that agents use, according to Mullin. “Some of the technology with some of the mics that all of these guys already wear, already have on them, have the ability for cameras too.”
Mullin is meeting with the Motorola CEO this week as part of those discussions: “We’re talking about how we can activate those faster too.”
ICE previously said that the agency had acquired devices to equip ICE officers and agents with body cameras, adding: “Training required to equip individual officers remains ongoing and we expect to complete this training soon.”
