Rainbow Falls and Devil's Postpile are arguably the most famous hikes in Mammoth Lakes, and there is a good reason why! If you go near peak waterfall season, Rainbow Falls is absolutely roaring, and the mystery of Devil's Postpile is awe-inspiring. On the day of our hike, the traditional road that takes hikers straight to the trailhead was closed, which meant the only access to Rainbow Falls and Devil's Postpile was to hike 14 miles and almost 3,000FT over Mammoth Pass and down to the falls. But that also meant that we were literally the only ones on trail - we could not believe we had Rainbow Falls all to ourselves! The particular route we took was one of the best hikes in Mammoth Lakes that we have done, and if there's opportunity with the road closures that are expected for the season it is an incredible way to hike Mammoth Lakes and have one of the most famous waterfalls in California all to yourself!
