LOTS OF TALKING! FYI!
You are warned. Also, please view my pinned comment where I clarify and correct the "levering" action I talk about.

I made my own pinless St. Peter's/St. Andrew's cross system. Benchcrafted makes the most popular version called the criss-cross.

In this video I give a close look at my DIY pinless criss-cross system, and I then go into detail (as much as I can) about how they work, and some of the things to consider when/if you make your own.

Videos to watch—notice how recent most are (in 2017 or after). I made mine in Jan 2017:

How I made mine:
I bought a 1.5" x 0.5" piece of bar stock steel of Amazon. It was 36" long, and I cut it in half.

On one end of each piece, I made a small, precise, and plumb/vertical hole 3/4" from one end, in the center. So, it has 3/4" on all sides, but one. Then, round over the three sides on both pieces.

In the EXACT middle, drill a hole through both pieces. If one is longer than the other, even them out by filing the longer piece down.

Place at least a 1/4" piece of steel rod between the two pieces, connecting them in the middle. Measure out your mortise on your bench leg and vise chop, and drill a hole all the way through from one side to the other to mount each piece through the hole at the end.

When done, reconnect the pieces and use the vise.

This, of course, is a very simplified set of instructions, but I was able to do it by reverse engineering what I saw online and after making my own mock-up out of wood.

Thanks!
