Alcedo Atthis is a painting by French contemporary artist Christophe Dupety.
In this series of oils on canvas, the painter is creating a tension between abstract and figurative painting, by representing an animal (bird, butterfly or dragonfly) perfectly drawn in a colorful, roughly sketched, or even totally abstract setting.
The painting displays the artist's approach perfectly whose endeavor it is, according to his own words, "to bring out the joy of painting in his work, i.e. color, fluidity, spontaneity..." The artist's gesture, sharp and vigorous, is often visible on the canvas. He also leaves room for "accidents" (drops and dripping) which "can occasionally give something to a work, an energy, some joy, something unexpected."
Through this explosion of colors, both energetic and joyous, Christophe Dupety gives us a veritable ode to nature and to life. An avid fan of an easily readable, direct form of painting, the artist is looking to arouse an immediate emotional response.
