2022 I – 8 is a work of textile art by the artist Christiane Maurer, from the series 2022 I.
In this series, the artist uses rectangular and horizontal geometric patterns to explore combinations and transitions between different colours. The challenge for her is to explore these gradations not with paint, which can be mixed, but with individual threads that must interact with the nuances of the adjacent threads.
Christiane Maurer’s works, hand-woven on a loom, explore interactions, transitions and combinations of colours. The language chosen is that of abstraction: simple geometric patterns are used to create intersecting lines of different colours. Each of the artist’s series explores a different combination of colours and motifs in a constantly evolving quest. Her works, which range from very vivid to more delicate chromatic tones, reveal shifting nuances and subtle iridescence influenced by the light in their environment and the movement of the viewer.
Christiane Maurer’s creative process skilfully blends traditional skills and expertise with modern digital methods. The creative part takes place on the computer: using a graphic design program, the artist works on colour studies to turn her initial idea into a digital design. Using another program, this is then transposed into a weaving draft, where the colours of each warp and weft thread are determined. Once the loom is set up, with all the coloured thread spools in their exact sequence, the artist begins to work using the ancient technique of double weaving. The woven work is stretched on a wooden frame, like a canvas. This process requires a great deal of precision and concentration, as well as a fairly lengthy working process that can last several months, from the artistic conception of the work to its production.
Christiane Maurer became an artist after extensive experience as an industrial designer in the textile sector and as a researcher in the field of colour perception and chromatic spaces. Today, she exhibits her work in Europe and has been a member of the Pulchri Studio, a long-established Dutch art institution, since 2022.
