This skill video will show you how to start, idle, and shut down an ARFF apparatus.
NOTE: Ensure vehicle is properly prepared and all personnel are clear before performing this skill.
1. Disconnect all external electrical cords, air hoses, or exhaust system hoses from the apparatus.
2. Mount the apparatus, using appropriate steps and handrails.
a. Don safety restraints.
b. Ensure all apparatus occupants are wearing safety restraints and hearing protection.
3. Check that the parking brake is set.
4. Turn on battery switch.
5. Turn on the ignition switch; wait until vehicle computers and systems go through normal start-up.
6. Operate the starter control following manufacturer’s recommendations.
7. Allow engine to idle and observe the apparatus gauges.
a. Shut down the engine immediately if oil pressure gauge does not fall within manufacturer’s recommendations within 5 to 10 seconds.
b. Check ammeter and/or voltmeter to make sure that electrical system is operating/charging properly.
c. Check air pressure gauge to ensure that adequate pressure is built up to release parking brake and operate service brake.
8. Shut off the engine following manufacturer’s procedures.
9. Turn the battery switch to the OFF position.
10. Reconnect external electrical cords, air hoses, or exhaust system hoses to the apparatus.
