This skill video will show you how to back an ARFF apparatus using mirrors.
1. Perform the steps in Skill Sheet 10-4 to start the apparatus.
2. Start the skill in an isolated practice area. Check both side mirrors. Maintain situational awareness, know the location of spotter(s) and know what is behind the apparatus. Follow local SOP/Gs.
3. Place the apparatus in reverse.
4. Back the apparatus slowly, checking each mirror from time to time, always watching spotter.
WARNING: If the driver needs to look away from spotter, stop the vehicle until it is possible see the spotter again.
a. Follow spotter’s directions, and stop if you cannot see the spotter.
b. Continue to back up until spotter signals you to stop.
WARNING: The spotter is only a guide, the driver is fully responsible for the vehicle while it is in motion.
5. Repeat until the candidate is proficient enough for the cone course.
6. Shut down the apparatus per Skill Sheet 10-4.
