Meet Mia Schirmer, the talented cinematographer behind, For Joan, as she shares her creative approach when shooting the film and collaborating with the crew to bring the vision to life.
The Bachelor of Arts Screen: Production Graduation Year 3 Productions culminate three years of learning, commitment to story and honing the craft. The graduation projects are driven by students’ ideas instead of the set briefs proposed through the various production exercises led during the course.
For Joan was directed by Micaela Osfield and produced by Siobhan Mithen last year. Micaela said about the film:
“For Joan, is a film about Australia in 1956, and my great aunt Joan, who, at 22 years-old, had a botched backyard abortion.” She explains how emotionally close she feels to the story and why she chose to bring it to screen, “It was a tragedy, and it was preventable. As an impassioned feminist, I feel the urgency as a female filmmaker to tell stories of the women who have been impacted by abortion laws across past decades, and to drive home the point that making abortions illegal doesn’t stop abortions; it just makes them more dangerous.”
