On Quiet Night Thought, paired together by a matchmaker, a peasant girl and a loyal soldier ponder love, marriage and longing through the letters they write to each other from afar.

The film is based on a personal love story set during the Great Leap Forward in 1950s China. It is based on actual letters written by the grandparents of producer Denis Curnow, who is of Chinese descent and directed by Yuxin Cao, who is from the Fujian province in China. The film's spoken language is Mandarin Chinese, and much of the dialogue is taken verbatim from the original letters, providing an incredible insight into the personal lives of the Chinese people during one of the most tumultuous periods in China's history.
