We've had a fantastic collaboration at Whipsnade Zoo this year, so far creating high wire feeders for the brown bears, tongue feeders for the aardvark, and we've recently been back creating three different variations of the high wire feeders for the amazing African wild dogs.
Over a two-day period, we installed the poles and then the lines, creating different feeding opportunities the the dogs. While the two smaller feeders are perfect for making the dogs work hard for food, the real stars are the reverse zip lines. The idea of these is that when the food is at the bottom of the zip, the dogs can't reach it. But using cooperation between the dogs they can use the firehose to pull the meat to the top where it is reachable. However, if they let go, the food rolls back to the start position.
African wild dogs are well known for being one of the best hunters in Africa, using their incredible group dynamics to work together to catch food. The idea of this enrichment is to encourage the same pack-feeding techniques, really making the most of the fantastic bond they have.
