Volunteering at Cheetah Experience, I was assigned as the caretaker / cleaner for the MeerKats. The matriarch female named Mia was VERY picky who she liked; mostly men. For a time, there was no other volunteers that Mia allowed in without attacking them. Everyone I introduced, she didn't like and bit one of them on the finger.
I liked spending time with them; warming up there tiny paws in my arms and mimicking their friendly calls. MeerKats are very curious animals and like playing. They loved climbing all over me and one day Mia stuffed herself down my jacket. I thought it was funny so filmed it.
Meerkats identify themselves by their unique sounding calls. They know up to 50 calls that have meaning to them. People don't speak Meerkat; accept a few of us :) But to identify people, Meerkats will use your scent from your mouth to identify you. Like a lion act in a circus where I'm the Big Cat, they place their heads and snoots right inside and take a whiff. I show several short clips where they do this on this video.
Looks like I'm ready to bite her head off like Ozzy Osborne did in his bat killing stunt, but I would never do that. Mia and the Meerkats could always trust me, even if they don't know it.
It is dangerous in Mia's case because if she does NOT like you, she will let it be known with a nasty bite. I didn't see it, but one female volunteer got a nasty bite on her nose when Mia took a sniff of her mouth and didn't like her. It was a bad bite. They are still wild animals and it's hard to predict some behaviors. My advice was to test Mia's mood with volunteers only between the fence to gather her mood.
