I visit Mischief, a female African leopard who happens to be in heat and showing off her best friendly display and "purr". I place the purring in quotes because much debate exists about what constitutes as a purr and what animal actually does purr. The estrus cycle is influenced by hormonal and chemical changes but emotions are also heightened by firing of neurons in the brain controlled by chemicals as well.

The debate surrounds that hyoid bone I spoke about in another purring video not too long ago. Cats with a fully developed hyoid bone (cheetahs and the lesser cats) can only purr and not roar. the BIG CATS like Leopards, lions, and tigers are the roarers while the lesser cats, like cheetahs, Mt. lions and all the smaller cats only purr and cannot roar. BUT... that is not the case for the snow and clouded leopard who have been shown to roar and purr, yet they have a partially developed hyoid bone (not supposed to purr). The lesser cats have a fully developed hyoid bone. Confusing? Yes... so I make it simpler. They ALL PURR!!!

I say that because it is the "intent" to purr where these cats make a vibrating noise. So one has a solid hyoid bone where the other doesn't. They all vibrate the tissue around the vocal chords and larynx to make this contenting sound.

Other animals purr as well... bears, raccoons, cervets, hyenas, mongooses and guinea pigs. It is my belief the sounds they make when they vibrate this tissue in their throats is an emotional response to stimuli. Meaning they either are happy, content and showing a friendly mood. Some purrs are a result of pain as well.

In Mischiefs case, she is announcing her receptiveness to mate and revealing a friendly attitude. That is because leopards can become violent when encountering another leopard. Leopards are solitary and don't come across each until breeding. They are territorial and will fight. To show potential mates they are friendly, leopards purr, display, and spread scents of their estrus status to other males to avoid a misunderstanding and a fight. A males knows the encounter will be friendly when he sees and hears the friendly display of an in-heat female like Mischief is displaying.

I love the cheetah purr and they purr all the time. It is rare for a leopard to purr and I only hear them when in heat. Male leopards purr as well but I have never heard it.

Thanks for watching!
