In June 2026 three Royal Australian Air Force P-8A Poseidon maritime patrol aircraft were deployed to Royal Malaysian Air Force Base Butterworth in Malaysia under Operation Gateway.

The aircraft conducted maritime domain awareness patrols in the North Indian Ocean and South China Sea. Operation Gateway was established in 1980 with the first deployment conducted in 1981.

It is one of Australia’s longest-running Defence operations and is conducted under the Malaysia-Australia Joint Defence Program. Operation Gateway forms part of Australia’s contribution to the preservation of regional security and stability in Southeast Asia.
