Exercise Orient Shield is the largest annual field training and live fire exercise between the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force (JGSDF) and the US Army, with over 2000 participants each year. In 2025 the Australian Army participated in Exercise Orient Shield for the first time, with approximately 200 Australian Army soldiers and officers deploying to Sekiyama Training area in the Niigata Prefecture, Japan, for the 10-day exercise in September 2025. The Australian Army contingent from 3rd Brigade’s 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, and 2nd Brigade, supported by Headquarters 1st (Australian) Division, participated in large-scale field, medical evacuation and command post training with the JGSDF and US Army to enhance our trilateral ability to remain at the forefront of military readiness.
