The Australian Government released Delivering the Future Estate: Defence Estate Audit Report on 4 February 2026, setting out a plan to deliver a more capability orientated, secure, modern and sustainable Defence estate.
In response to the 2023 Defence Strategic Review, an independent enterprise-wide audit was conducted to assess whether the estate meets Defence’s contemporary operational and capability requirements, now and in the future. The Report made a series of findings and recommendations laying bare that the Defence estate is not fit for purpose.
The Government has agreed or agreed-in-principle to the Report’s 20 recommendations. Significantly, the Government agreed to divest 67 sites that do not align with current or future Defence capability priorities, including some that have had a prominent role in our history. The Australian Government acknowledged that these sites have served us well during the past century, and we will be using this process to preserve history and enhance public access to sites of historic importance so all Australians can celebrate our proud military history.
