James Kalm tries to stay abreast of the artistic action on the Downtown New York scene, but even he is squeezed out of some of these events by crowds of thirsty young artists, hipsters and hangers-on. Though starting out for an evening’s excursion intending to do some art documentation, circumstances sometimes dictate otherwise. So your correspondent returns to these scenes of the culture, and tries to capture a video redo of a pair of shows.
Adam Parker Smith “Let’s Celebrate” is a collection of recent sculptural pieces highlighting the faux realistic water-toys the artist has been producing for his last couple of exhibitions. These homages to “plastic culture” also present biting critiques of consumerism and its constituency within the “avant-garde” as it was presented in the last millennium.
Further east, at the Derek Eller Gallery, J.J.Manford “Fish Tank TV’ is a display of intimate paintings of interiors, richly colored with layers of pure pigment many on textural grounds that riff on the image of paintings within paintings and other cross cultural artifacts.
In the main gallery Nicole Cherubini lays out a selection of ambitious ceramic works with pieces that refer to archaic Greek and Roman amphora, battle shields, and chairs. These forms are crafted with brilliant glazes on shapes cut into sections that seem to refer to different styles, materials and art historical time frames. This program was recorded November 6, 15, and 17, 2019.
