jameskalmroughcut | Thérèse Mulgrew UNFOLDING at FREIGHT+VOLUME @jameskalmroughcut | Uploaded February 2020 | Updated October 2024, 2 hours ago.
James Kalm has recently neglected his mission of trying to bring snippets of the New York art scene to his world wide audience. Between visiting museum exhibitions, in which the work of his alter ego is being presented, or going upstate to deliver lectures at colleges, being away from the studio and video editing programs have sucked up all his time. But, Thérèse Mulgrew’s exhibition “Unfolding” is a chance to get back in the groove.
Mulgrew is a young Chicago native, and this New York debut displays her ongoing series of nude and seminude mostly female figures. To quote from the press release “Choosing predominantly female subjects in a direct effort to confront societal anxiety surrounding female sexuality…Mulgrew carefully crops and poses her subjects, accenting faces, hands, and other loci of physical expression.” There is also a play between the figures and floral patterned backgrounds, and accentuated abstracted shadows that pronounce their own narrative elements. A musical introduction is provided by The Meetles meetles.com/abouttheband.html. This program was recorded February 13, 2020.
