The Kootenays were forever altered by the Columbia River Project. Controlling the flow of the water in the Columbia basin meant that the Americans could produce more power from their own dams on the river. The dams in BC would also help control the flooding of the Columbia river.
On Sept. 16, 1964, Canadian Prime Minister Lester B. Pearson, B.C. Premier W.A.C. Bennett, and U.S. President Lyndon B. Johnson ratified the Columbia River Treaty to guide the management of water resources of the Columbia River Basin, provide economic development and help prevent major floods.
BC gained not only the electrical power on the dams constructed in BC, but also half of the increase in power generation in the United States - the "downstream Benefits". The Columbia River Project remains one of the major sources of hydro power in BC.
“Action on the Columbia” was made by the information services of British Columbia Hydro and Power Authority to convey the benefits and effects of the Columbia River Treaty to the people of British Columbia. The film features aerial views of the upper Columbia River before the dams went in.
