Accents is a cell-based composition for 2 pianos. It uses techniques from minimal music (but tends to move faster through different variations than actual minimal music). While playing the fragments, the amount of legato is varied and accents are added to the different notes, hopefully creating an additional dimension in the listening experience.
The rules for how often each fragment is played are a bit complex (each voice is allowed to play an equal amount of notes, which is a multiple of 7, so in case of shorter notes, some fragments can stop earlier than others). Supercollider unrolls the fragments and adds the accents randomly, although constrained to certain allowed moments in time (and these allowed moments in time change over the course of the piece).
Each cell is composed by hand, and executed by supercollider on a Roland Integra-7. Performance by real pianos using both hands simultaneously is pretty challenging because of the accents. I should know, I tried to play some...
