A third piece on a 12-tone row. This time the computer shuffled the black and white keys from the piano into this order: b, g, cis, d, es, c, f, e, bes, f, gis, a. Because 12 notes is short and therefore a bit limiting I decided to give myself something more by appending to the 12-tone row the same row in reverse, and then append the original row again. These exact notes form the "melody" in the piano part. All the rest is composed "by hand" to make this tone row "work" as music. Compared to the previous two 12-tone row pieces, I aim at slightly more adventurous harmonies this time, so while still far from atonal music we're not quite in the realm of everyday music anymore. A kind of twilight zone, where I love to explore. The movie consists of a fragment of Sergei Parajanov's "Kiev Frescoes" film project (1966). The movie was forbidden by Russian officials and the negatives have been destroyed, but about 14 minutes of fragments still exist. In "Kiev Frescoes" Sergei Parajanov experimented with a new poetic cinematic language, which also evokes a kind of twilight zone and therefore I think it's a good match to my music. His new poetic language in 1969 culminated in Parajanov's masterpiece "The color of pomegranates". Enjoy!
