David’s family crisis becomes a civil war as Absalom returns from exile, steals the loyalty of Israel, seizes his father’s throne, publicly violates David’s concubines, and eventually dies while hanging helplessly from a tree.
In this episode of God-Free Bible Study, we continue through 2 Samuel chapters 14–18—and the house of David somehow becomes even more dysfunctional.
After killing Amnon for raping Tamar, Absalom remains banished from Jerusalem. Joab hires a “wise woman” to manipulate David with a fabricated story, convincing him to allow Absalom’s return. But even after coming home, Absalom is kept away from the king—until he gets Joab’s attention by setting his field on fire.
Once reconciled with David, Absalom begins a remarkably public campaign to undermine him. He stations himself near the city gate, intercepts people seeking justice, tells them the king has failed them, and promises that everything would be better if only he were in charge. According to the story, he does this for four years without David learning about it.
Absalom then declares himself king, forcing David to abandon Jerusalem. David leaves ten concubines behind to maintain the palace—and those women become victims of the punishment Yahweh previously announced for David’s crimes.
At the advice of Ahithophel, Absalom publicly has sex with his father’s concubines on the palace roof. The Bible presents this as the fulfillment of God’s judgment against David for taking Bathsheba and murdering Uriah. Once again, innocent women are subjected to sexual violence as punishment for something a man did.

The text expects us to believe that Absalom openly undermined David for years without anyone telling the king, that his most trusted advisers switched loyalties with almost no suspicion, that 20,000 men died in another conveniently enormous battle, and that Absalom was finally defeated because his head happened to become lodged in an oak tree while his mule continued without him.
Behind the absurd storytelling, however, is something much darker: women are treated as property, sexual violence becomes a tool of political humiliation, and Yahweh’s promised “justice” is inflicted upon people who had no part in David’s crimes.
David is supposedly the man after God’s own heart. His household is now defined by rape, murder, revenge, betrayal, political propaganda, civil war, and a divine punishment carried out against innocent women.
