Australian researchers have discovered how BMAA, a neurotoxin from blue-green algae, can cause damage in the central nervous system.
"BMAA mimics an amino acid that our bodies naturally use to make proteins called L-Serine. Mistaking the toxin for the amino acid, the body incorporates it into human proteins, rendering them harmful."
